Learn about us
CyclePottery studio was founded in 2013 by Kathryn Kothe: Mother of 3; avid cyclist who still jumps in bike races from time to time; sociology graduate school drop-out turned potter and entrepreneur; co-founded AtheletReg.com (home of BikeReg.com, RunReg.com, & more).
Background: As a child, her favorite activity at Gnaw Bone Camp in Southern Indiana was the creek hike to collect the rich red clay they would then take back to camp, painstakingly shave down on slate boards, then add water to make the clay just right to form little pots on the wheel. It wasn't until she came to UMass for graduate school where she discovered that the artisan culture and professions, especially in Western Mass, were actually thriving. After taking lessons from Erica Wurtz, and Nancy LaPointe, she left graduate school for a 2 year full time apprenticeship with Tom White of Northfield, MA while bike racing full time and coaching cyclists. Mothering soon after became her primary focus for 10 years, and then she started CyclePottery by creating custom mugs for bike races and events and cyclists. After teaching a few friends and a few kids back in 2013 and 2014, CyclePottery blossomed into the community studio and gallery it is today.
